2 / Precise language, better results
Welcome to Issue 2!
As we talk to more guests on the Technically Lit podcast, one theme keeps coming up again and again: the importance of communication—and more specifically, the role of being a translator. That really resonates with my own experience as a product professional.
The further I’ve gotten in my career, the less I need to focus on the hard skills I know, and the more it’s been about translating context across disciplines, drawing connections, and helping the whole team move forward together.
A big part of that work is about building a shared vocabulary. When I was chatting with Mitchell recently, we got into the nitty-gritty of different data needs across teams, and he mentioned that one of the most valuable things he did was create a shared data dictionary—a single source of truth to keep everyone aligned.
That kind of precision in language is key to great cross-functional collaboration. When we’re clear and exact in how we describe things, we spend less time translating and more time building. That’s one of the reasons I care so deeply about technical literacy: it gives us the terminology and frameworks we need to communicate product experiences clearly, no matter which hat we’re wearing.
Let’s get Technically Lit,
Nick
